Family Learning ASL Videophone Program
There are many hearing parents and families in the northern part of California with deaf and hard-of-hearing chiildren who need to commuinicate with their young children who are between the ages of 0-7 years old. In 2007, the Outreach Division at the California School for the Deaf and Purple Communications established the Family Learning American Sign Language pilot program with eight families to help families meet that need.
This learning program enables families to communicate with their children effectively by using American Sign Language.
The Family Learning ASL Videophone Program offers 30-minute weekly sessions over a period of 12 weeks in order to complete a semester of sign language learning. Many families are unable to leave their home in order to attend traditional sign language courses at a school; this program offers those families the opportunity to set up classes from home. Families learn American Sign Language in the comfort of their living room through videophone conference capability, using high speed Internet access. Families work directly with the instructor to schedule convenient lesson times, which can be during the day, in the evening, or on weekends.
