Frequently Asked Questions

California School for the Deaf

When is Homecoming? Open House? Graduation?

Can I visit inside the classrooms?

The school allows the public to visit inside the classrooms once a year during Open House (November 2010).

Families who are interested in having their deaf child enroll at CSD can visit inside the classrooms by contacting Ginny Malzkuhn and setting up a family tour. Email Ginny at gmalzkuhn@csdf-cde.ca.gov

During the school year, no one else is allowed to visit inside the classrooms EXCEPT FOR: university students doing a practicum and graduate students in teacher training programs. We value our students' education and need to minimize the intrusion on their class time.

During the school year, the public is invited to take a general tour of the campus. The general tour is offered once a month. Please note that the general tour does not include going inside the classrooms: Tour Schedule for 2009-2010

Who can attend the California School for the Deaf?

Deaf and hard-of-hearing children from 46 counties throughout Northern California,
between the ages of 3 and 21.

How does the school accommodate children who live too far away to attend on a daily basis?

Approximately 60% of the students who attend CSD stay on campus during the week and go home each weekend. There is no cost to families for supervised living quarters, meals, or transportation.

What are some of the benefits my child will receive by attending CSD?

Does the school offer opportunities for students to participate in organized sports?

Yes. Students who attend CSD may participate in football, basketball, volleyball, baseball,
softball, wrestling, cross country, track, swimming, and other activities. From time to time, CSD hosts national tournaments with schools from other states. Elementary through high school students can compete in organized team sports or intramural sports. Visit our school website for more information: csdeagles.com

How much does it cost to send my child to the California School for the Deaf?

There is no cost to families.

Do you have speech services at CSD?

CSD has a Spoken English/Communication Department that provides support in articulation therapy, speech reading, auditory learning, and communication strategies for students who benefit from these services.  Areas addressed in consideration for enrollment include: language level, use of amplification (hearing aids or CI), motivation, previous therapy history, imitation skills, etc.

How is speech taught at CSD if teachers do not use spoken English all day in the classrooms?

The Spoken English/Communication Department seeks to take advantage of the enriched signing environment at CSD as the students increase their language skills and have more internal language to try to put into spoken words. This strong language foundation is used to help students understand the specific speech instruction. Various articulation techniques are used as well as visual supports including demonstration, pictures, and computer software that provide visual representations of sound.
