California School for the Deaf’s Class of 2010:

Students Participate in the 138th Commencement Ceremony

After Receiving Challenging and Rewarding K-12 Education

Fremont, California -- June 11, 2010 – With confidence to move on in life, 38 students will march in the California School for the Deaf’s 138th commencement ceremony. The program will be held in the school gymnasium at 3:00 P.M. on June 11, 2010 at 39350 Gallaudet Drive in Fremont.

Colleges and Careers

Twenty-four students will be going to community colleges; six students will be going to four-year colleges and universities. Eight students will go straight to employment.

 

Superintendent Dr. Henry Klopping remarked, “The California School for the Deaf graduates were fortunate to have received an education that has been challenging, rewarding and enduring. CSD strives to maintain high standards in all subject areas in academics, vocational training and career education.” 

“The remarkable support from the Career Center which provides intensive transition support has made a substantial difference in the student’s success with their after graduation transition goals, “explained Rona Hunt, Senior Academic Advisor. 

 

Steve Orman, Career Center Principal, commented, “What makes CSD a school with outstanding accomplishments is the tremendous school leadership and our exceptional collaboration among all of the staff who work at CSD as an entity to ensure success in every Deaf graduate’s future.”

Valedictorian

Amelia Bernstein (GPA 3.95) is an academically gifted student with outstanding artistic skills who is also active in extracurricular activities. Teachers describe Amelia to be a person who challenges herself to greater and greater heights. She has pushed herself to expand her learning by taking advanced classes, both at the high school and college level.

 

The valedictorian was involved with a variety of extracurricular activities including the yearbook staff;  student director/script writer for the 2009 play “The Story Must Go On”; Academic Bowl member and team captain; Gay Straight Alliance officer; class officer for several years ; school plays; international studies participant; peer advisor;  prom chairperson; representative at 2009-2010 Jr.NAD conference.  In addition, she took animation courses at the Academy of Art University. She also played on the volleyball team.

Salutatorian

Valerie Farr (GPA 3.75) has maintained high grades while also being involved with many extracurricular activities. Valerie has demonstrated herself to be a person of character showing genuineness in many situations, both academic and social interactions.

 

The salutatorian was the yearbook editor In chief and the other activities included academic bowl ;  Foothill Athletic Association (FAA) officer;  student government; class officer; peer advisor; and International Studies participant. Valerie also played on the volleyball, cheerleading, softball, swimming team and volunteered as a  swimming assistant coach for elementary/middle school students. 

 

The teachers commended on how friendly and respectful Valerie is, accepting of others. She brings insight to discussions in class.
