Become A Volunteer

More than 100 volunteers participate annually in the volunteer program at California School for the Deaf. Opportunities are available for volunteers to support teachers in the classroom, tutor students, coach our student athletes, assist with clerical tasks, provide childcare at workshops, and help out with special events. Volunteers include parents of Deaf children, ASL students, children of Deaf adults, and members of the Deaf community. Volunteer assignments are Monday through Friday, with occasional weekend opportunities.

Please note that we generally require volunteers to commit to regular weekly assignments, for a minimum of 40 hours volunteer service, and we prefer to have volunteers continue for a full semester or the full school year. Our wonderful volunteers add a powerful dimension to the education programs.

How to apply:

  1. You may contact the volunteer coordinator to request an application packet or download the Volunteer Packet above. Applications take at least two weeks to process.
  2. After submitting your application, set up an appointment to meet with the volunteer coordinator for an interview and to discuss possible placement options.
  3. You will be required to do fingerprinting though CSD, follow our new TB protocol, and complete the in-service for new volunteers prior to starting your volunteer assignment.
