6+1 Writing Assessment

The 6+1® Trait writing assessment is given to students in grades K-12 in the fall and in the spring. The 6+1® Trait writing assessment model uses an analytical rubric that evaluates the qualities of writing at different levels of achievement. The 6+1® Traits that are evaluated include: ideas, organization, voice (expression), word choice, sentence fluency, and conventions.

The rubric that we use was developed by Education Northwest and is being used by all over the country. See http://educationnorthwest.org/webfm_send/774 for an example of the rubrics used in grades K-2 and http://educationnorthwest.org/webfm_send/773 for an example of the rubrics used in grades 3-12. Teachers use the 6+1® Trait Writing assessment results to provide valuable feedback to students and as a tool to guide their instruction.
